Just because we seem to like beer
There was a recent post about where to find cheap beer in the city - my friend just happened to send me this link and I think it's genius! http://www.iamelectro.com/beersearch.htmlIt lists drink specials by night in Vancouver. It of course doesn't have every bar but it's pretty handy. I think it might also need to be updated a bit. Kind of cool anyway though! For example, the Yaletown brewery has $2.99 pints if it rains before noon on Thursdays. WTF? |

mmmmmm, beer!
Probably been asked before, but where's the cheapest place to get Stella on tap? I'm not in the mood to pay $8 for a pint but at the same time I'm not in the mood to stay at home in front of the boob tube either. I'm OH MY GOD feeling social. WHO KNEW?? Doesn't have to be in the city proper. I prefer a dive-y bar over a stuck up Yaletown bar (but in Yaletown I'll be paying $20 for a pint and the snobs will throw me out for wearing Chucks with holes in them anyways). 3....2....1.....go. I am a 1st year 5th grade teacher. Does anyone else use StoryTown Harcourt reading program? If so, how do you organize your small grop (guided reading) leveled reader books? So far I have each colored book in a matching colored folder with the lesson marked on it along with the small group instruction guide. I am finding that they are taking up too much room (i am using hanging folders in a crate). Anyone have any better ideas to store them? |

Darwin Award Cyclist Rant
Bike safety runs both ways. I want to not run you over with my car because I've been run over while riding, it sucks and I have the scars to prove it. But you need to put a minimal amount of effort into riding safely and defensively for the conditions. Minimal effort like not wearing all black non-reflective gear on a black bike while lane-splitting on a major thoroughfare at night in a blustery rainstorm with a nearly-dead headlight and no flashers. Then how about not sitting in my passenger-side blind spot for eight blocks or a full kilometer before trying to pass me on the right just as I try to turn right at a stoplight. Then you curse and scream and punch the side of my car and rhetorically ask me if I even saw you? No, I didn't, I couldn't, because you went out of your way not to be seen. Current Mood: discontent |

odd question
But those of you in the legal know, what is the protocol for someone serving you with legal papers? I was under the impression that it can't the person filing/serving, but are they allowed to use anyone to do it for them? Can they use a boyfriend/girlfriend? Do they need a witness? I'm sure I could find all this out by google, but I find navigating legal talk so exhausting and difficult to understand that I thought I would put it out there is case any of you Vancouver peeps know about this kind of stuff. THanks. Current Mood: awakeCurrent Music: I Might Be Wrong - Radiohead |

Christmas Exchange
So in this area, it's typical around Christmas for teachers to have students learn about Christmas around the world and how it's celebrated. It's the way they get in multiculturalism in for the December month. I want to do something different with my 5th graders though. The idea is exchanging letters with another class in a different country to discover how those students celebrate the winter holidays, and not just Christmas, as well as special traditions in those families as well, things that the Internet wouldn't always tell. Each of my students would write a letter that I would then collect and send out to another classroom. I know it seems early to ask, but I'd like to be able to have them do the project and have letters to see before our Christmas break in late December. Are there any 4-6th teachers in other English speaking countries that would be willing to do this? My students are in rural WV for reference. x-posted around. |

tenancy branch experience and rant about verbally abusive roommate
So, I had to move out of my place because my roommate was a verbally abusive asshole. He has contacted the Ministry of Housing and Social Development, and wants $800 from me. I'm looking for anyone with experience with these guys, my phone interview isn't until the 17th and I will probably be quite nervous until then. He wants $500 in rent, not for the last month I stayed - I paid that - he wants money for this month. Even though I'm not living there. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that one is going to get laughed at since I left on the first, gave him 10 days notice, and he kept my damage deposit. He also want's $300 for professional cleaners. Because I left the floors dusty. He also claims I "never cleaned the shower", and a bunch of other lies. Is the MoH reasonable? How responsible am I? I'm just subletting from him anyway, some other company owns the house (I have no idea who) and I'm pretty sure I was being rented to illegally too. Thoughts? PS, if you're looking for a place to rent, stay away from houses on Upland dr with guys named Rob... |

Unlocking GSM cellphone
I want to get my GSM cellphone (Motorola V3) unlocked (from Rogers), and the place I tried over the Internet (recommended by people I know) didn't work out. Anybody has an idea of a shop that would do it in Vancouver, close to Yaletown / downtown (I'd rather not go across the city for that) ? Thanks a lot. |

Fume Hood Regulations
Hi Fellow Vancouverites! I have a question for you all. I tried to have a look through the Comm's archive to no avail so I will post it here. Is a landlord in any way compelled to have a working fume hood over the stove in a rental apartment? Thanks in advance for your, as always, sage wisdom! |

Where can I buy sand? I don't need exorbitant amounts, just like a couple of kilos. This seems like a really dumb question because I live by the water and could REALLY just go 5 feet with a bucket but I don't want to deal with sea creatures/sticks and stuff. Thanks for any help? |

Fax spam?
Okay, a quick question to other vancouverites who have fax machines at work..... are you guys getting ridiculous amounts of fax spam, moreso than usual lately? My parts fax machine just got spammed twice in the last two hours by the SAME company.... some asshole ticket broker. I'm tempted to fax them a picture of anal beads or something but my company name shows up on the fax... damn. Current Mood: pissed off |

Fun Thing For Friday
I'm a pre service teacher with year 5s and I've been given the last lesson on Friday to 'do something fun'. However there are several boys and one girl who will get very very rowdy, and the whole class has no team skills, we've done a LOT of art lately... and I'm stumped for ideas. I wanted to do Drama but was put off it by my mentor teacher saying that you have to be EXTREMELY strict to be able to do drama. And so I'm starting to agree. Help me think of something? Thanks so much! |

ssh behaving strangely
So here's a really weird issue I'm having with a fresh install of Karmic Koala. I've never seen this before. I have the new machine set up nicely and I have a static ip assigned. I cannot, for the life of me, ssh into this machine when it boots. no ssh, no ping, nothing. like it's not there. if I reset the ip address, hit the net, etc I get nothing. BUT, if I ssh from that machine into my box, then I can ssh into it. It's almost as if I have to prove to the Karmic machine that I'm a real boy before it will play with me. Anyone have any idea what that might be? i thought iptables, but it's blank. I have no firewall running (on the machine) and the only thing between me and it is a router. |

I've got a box running Hardy Heron I've been using as a file server. It's been acting a little flaky lately, and today for some peculiar reason when it reboots the machine seems to just die. I can log in remotely, the shares still work, I just can't access the box locally. When it does boot, just before the orange line gets to the end (on the splash screen) there's a peculiar system beep (i.e. not through the audio port), then nothing. I've tried restarting in recovery mode, and there don't appear to be any obvious problems... until you get to the login screen, and the video gets wonky and it appears to hang. I've tried booting from the live CD, but the options on what to repair aren't obvious... I strongly suspect a boot drive is failing, but what do I know? I'd like to keep all the configurations as I've got a rather large OS RAID I'd hate to reconfigure, as well as the server settings. Is there an easy way to back up the relevant boot drive settings remotely, replace the boot drive, and install a more recent version of ubuntu (while still retaining the settings)? |

Peaceful Enjoyment... if it can be called that?
I wonder if anyone here has any insight...Does a tenant who has paid rent for the month have any recourse if renovations on another suite generate such noise that it renders their own suite uninhabitable? We are home sick today (no, it's not H1N1) and in the suite below us they are jack hammering off hardwood tiles... all day! It's horrible, and we need to rest! Alternatively, can you suggest anywhere people with a bad cold could go to hang out? Outside sucks when you're sick, but everywhere else is a contagion risk, right? Ugh!!! : ( |

Supplies for bouquets
I'm making a bunch of bouquets for a huge project and I'm looking for supplies. I was wondering if there was a cheaper alternative to Micheal's because I have to make a LOT. Here's the supplies I need -Fabric Ribbon (yards and yards of them!) -Floral Stems (it's around 30 for $4, but a friend of mine said she once found a pack of $100 for only $1 at a dollar store! He doesn't remember which one though. I've checked the 2 dollar stores near Metrotown but they seemed to have none.) - Cellophane Thanks in advance!!! =) Current Mood: cheerful |

Tenant signs contract, flakes out before moving in
This is happening to my friend, but I`m just curious what you guys think about it. We already checked some landlord resources online, but couldn`t find any answers. Also, her parents are out of town, so we don`t know what kind of progress they`re making on it. My friend`s parents decided to rent out their basement suite, and found a family who was interested. I think there`s an e-mail record of their planning on moving, and I know there`s a signed lease for a 6-month stay. The family has paid the first month`s rent and security deposit. They were supposed to move in yesterday, but my friend got a letter from them around the 30th of October saying that they`re no longer going to move in and expect to get their advance rent and deposit back in its entirety by such and such date please and thank you. Isn`t this kind of screwing my friend`s family in that they were under the impression that they had renters, stopped looking for potential tenants, and are now losing the rent for the month that they could have gotten from non-flakes? My friend`s family should at least keep the deposit for exactly this kind of situation, right? I mean, they`ll have to get it settled somehow, either in a conversation or with an advisor or a lawyer even, but I`m just curious about this weird situation. |
